A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY, MOSCOW, 17TH CENTURY IN A SILVER BASMA OKLAD CIRCA 1776, the Virgin Mary`s body surrounded by apostles and two bishops, a standing figure of Christ is depicted passing Mary`s soul (in the shape of a swaddled infant) to two angels who will take it to heaven; above the figure of Christ appears a six-winged seraphim spreading its wings in a sign of protection. The gilt silver basma oklad with an ornate chased and repousse floral design. Egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on wood panel with kovcheg.
